THE TRIUMPH OF ORTHODOXY

Monastic Choir of the Valaam Monastery

1 CD (colour booklet 52 pages)
2002 The Igor Matvienko Production Centre

The CD receives its title from the office celebrated on the Sunday of Orthodoxy, the first Sunday in Lent. This feast is dedicated to the victory of the Holy Church over the heresy of iconoclasm and the establishment of the dogma of the worshipping of icons. However, it acquired a broader meaning later and signifies the triumph of Orthodox Christian teaching over all heresies, which were condemned by the Pleroma of the Church at the Seven Ecumenical Councils and in later epochs.

The CD contains hymns of the All-Night Vigil. Special attention should be given to the Troparion «We venerate Thy most pure image?», which reveals the essence of the veneration of icons and conveys the meaning of this dogma. The idea of the feast is also expressed in the stanzas «Now the light of godliness extends over all?», «The honour shown to the icon?» and «Moses, in the season of abstinence?» These hymns affirm the veneration of icons, which is an integral part of Orthodox Christian piety.

In the context of the celebration of the Triumph of Orthodoxy all hymns on the CD resound as a hymn of victory of the Truth of God over the false ideas of this world, as a hymn of triumph of the Holy Church, «and the powers of death shall not prevail against it».

Colour illustrated booklet (52 pages) in the Russian and English languages with text on the veneration of icons and the complete text of all hymns.
